The village of Montefrío is located in the northern area of the Poniente Granadino (Western Granada) Region and is close to the Provincial Border of Cordoba.

Montefrío remains typically Moorish in character, and the ruins of a Moorish castle sits near the highest point. As Montefrio is situated midway between the Sierra de Priego and Sierra Parapanda, and has a commanding the open valley between these ranges, it became one of the chief frontier fortresses of the Moors in the 15th century.

During the Muslim period Montefrío an important role in protecting the trade routes between Cordoba and the coast - the Costa Tropical.
